Informing the public, one webpage at a time…

MuskogeeWeb @ the Muskogee-Gov Project

Muskogee Web was created in 2022 with the purpose of making informing Muskogee County on local government structure, operations and history.

Local government forms the backbone of American Society. American local government can trace its roots back to colonial times, as colonies operated as its own separate entity. During the Industrial Revolution the role and responsibilities of local government radically increased. Cities started to establish services like police, fire, road maintenance, sanitation and ports. The development of cities lead to urbanization and economic growth. In the modern day, the importance of local government has not waned, it plays a outsized effect on all American citizens. Cities today have a mission wide in scope. Everything from law enforcement, justice, building inspections, water/sewage, emergency management, welfare, housing control and much more. Even some things typically left to the state government like environmental protection and bridge maintenance may be pushed to local government.

However local government has its challenges and short-comings. Muskogee County especially has faced some serious headwinds. Local governments often are overwhelmed with responsibilities with not enough resources to adequately handle them. The Muskogee-Gov Project started MuskogeeWeb to first outline the structure of Local Government. Then to elaborate on policy, legislative affairs and community challenges has a whole in a unbiased and objective point of view. Muskogee County can be a little bit of a black box sometimes. The MuskogeeWeb Wiki hopes to bring transparency and to foster civic engagement with local government.
